After reading "A way with words, or Away with words"

In modern society, texting and instant messaging quickly captured the hearts of young people. Some scholars believe that when the txt becomes a trend, people's real life communication skills will be gradually weakened. They fear that this would affect children to use the standard English language in the future. But the writer do not agree with it, he thinks txt will not let people away with words, and actually it may give people a new way with words. Because firstly, people cannot use txt without knowing English, when people use txt, they must understand its contents. Secondly, with people grow up, they will use the txt less than they were young, because when people step into society, they will be more formal and professional. Thirdly, txt is just a new product of the English development, it need time to be adopt. The writer use a lot of citation to proof his thesis, and the best one is firstly to introduce a opposite view, and then use arguments to refute this view. I think this essay is persuasive, because it has enough evidence to support the writer's claim, when I finished reading, I can say something why txt will not let people away with words and I really agree with it.

Effect of quotation

I read the "radical but right". In its second paragraph, writer used the quotation "In many cases, humans have 'duties regarding animals that are not at the same time duties to animals' (Feinberg, 2002,p.51)." to explain the topic of this essay, which addresses the question of animal rights. And at here writer used the "Duty regarding animals" compare with "Duty to animals" to stress that although people put some statues to protect animals, they have not remedied the problem, because "the rights that they try to put into effect are not as much as animals truly deserve." Writer choose to present the research material in this way is not only explained her mind clearly by a comparison sentence, it is also let reader think more about if they go a right way to protect animals, and if it is necessary that animals need their rights.

The research gives prominence to the thesis which is "under current laws we have some obligations toward animals, but they do not have right themselves" in this essay. After the research, writer can go easy to explains that why some obligations toward animals does not what animals really wanted, they need rights belong to themselves, it is radical but it can solve problems basically.

Victory writes history

In China we have an adage:"Losers are always in the wrong." It means that winner makes the rules and histories, and losers live by them. Maybe it is a little extreme, but actually, the history written by the winners are far from the losers'.

The best instance is Adolf Hitler, who is the leader of Nazi Germany during World War II. In history textbook, he is the one who waging a war of aggression and massacred many of Jews, he is greedy and cruel, he broken the world peace and brought a lot of pains for humans around the world, he like a devil form the hell. But is it the truth? I mean certainly he is fighting and made numbers of people suffered from wars. But everything has two sides. From a homeless to an overlord of the world, he is an incontrovertible talented chief, he promoted economic growth rapidly and implemented proactive social security policy, they all let his country rise miraculously. He want to establish one united world but his greed lead to failure. In fact, the ultimate peace is the global unity which he can not finished. If he conquered the world several years ago, I think the history will be opposite. He may be a hero in history and everyone will remember his name by his struggle and achievements instead of his cruel and greedy.

Some Similar Feeling

PART 1:
Different culture can not be adopted easily for everyone who arrived in a new country, no matter what a strong adaptive capability you have. Liu’s need to be with other Chinese is a general phenomenon. Because as a foreigner student, you can catch up others minds and even talk with them fluently, but it is difficult to understand and adopt their culture indeed, like the excerpt of “Two Years in the Melting Pot” said, “I was born Chinese and so I think in a Chinese way.” For these days I have been in the U.S, I have a similar feeling, I think as time goes on, maybe I can make progress with English, or make friends with other local students easily, but I can not change my traditional mind anytime, because I grow up with Chinese culture, it has figured my view deeply, even now I live in a new place and face a new culture.

Therefore we can find the accounts for the need to be with other people from the same country, even if they are strangers. The same culture give people more common subject of a talk, it will easily make people much closer. Especially in abroad, most of people we meet are foreigners, so when we meet a native person, we would like to talk with him or her, and usually it will be a beginning of a new friendship.
PART 2:
Melting pot: place where large numbers of immigrants from many different countries live together.
blur: (cause sth to) become unclear or indistinct .
gap:
1. opening or break in sth or between two things
2. unfilled interval of space
3. unfilled interval of time
4. (fig) separation
5. (fig) deficiency which needs to be filled

The difference of nonverbal communication

In many situations of social communication, we communicate with each other without languages. We use gestures, eye contact, and body space in communication frequently, it is a good manner to express our real feelings, and sometimes, it is the only way to share ourselves feeling, because there are something can’t be explained by languages in our life.

We can see the nonverbal communication in everycountry, most of them have the same meaning around the world, such as nod head is means “yes”, shake head is like to say”no”, wave hand when you leave, thumb up instead of “good”. But if you observe carefully and you will notice that between your own culture and another culture, there are some differences in noncerbal communication. For example, in China, if you stare at a person straightly, this person may feel not comfortable and will think you are a rude man (or woman), especially for woman, maybe someone will consider that you are not cultured enough. But in the U.S., when you talk with someone, you need to look at the other side to show your respect.

When we communicate with others, we must notice the difference of nonverbal communication beween different cultures, use the right way of nonverbal communication to contact with another people will let our thinking more vivid and simple.

IMPRESSION

The first four minutes of contact can be crucial in determining how the rest of the interaction and perhaps the whole relationship will go. But sometimes, people will formed a first impression of someone that eventually proved to be completely wrong, so I think the first impression is important but not the only factor to define someone.

There is a good example about me and one of my best friends. We were in the same class in middle school, and we lived in the same room. She grew up in a rich family and interested in any activities at school. At the beginning of the first term, we met each other in dormitory when I read a novel in the bed. She had just moved into our room, I put down my book and asked if she need some help, “No, I don’t like someone touch my stuff, but I would be pleased if you can open windows.” She said, “How arrogant a roommate!” I thought while I open windows for her, then I back to read. In coming several minutes she wanted to have a chat about some associations, but I had no interested in talking anymore, I paid my attention to read and answered her questions unconcernedly. After several weeks, we became best friends and talk about our first meeting, she said that she thought I was an unconcerned girl except for reading when we met for the first time, she also told me she was used to speak directly and can’t believe it would hurt somebody. Of course, she had found that I was enthusiastic in some clubs.

So afterward, when I form an impression of someone, I always remind myself that maybe it is not right, to be texted in the future and don’t let bias blind me.

“Mother Tongue” responsing

With respect to language as it is used in different person or situations, there are many interesting difference.

My language between peers usually more easy and humorous, and will be relatively simple, because with my own friends, I always omit some elements of a sentence, it can be understood between each other with using a few words. I also often use some words known only between my friend and I, this way we converse with each other could make us more intimately. However, with my parents, I talk to them more respectfully and with more careful thought, because I would like to give them the best part of me and I want to prove that I has grow up, I hope that they are proud of me.

In different situations, language to be used in different ways. I think I would never say “Hey! Guy!” when I meet my professor in campus. On the contrary, when I can not understand my friends sometimes, I just say “what?” instead of a long sentence, such as “Excuse me, I can not quite understand what you are talking about, can you repeat it?” So the language you use in formal situation has much difference from the language you use in less formal ones.

Now, I live in a new country with my parents, I love them so much because they did too many things in 21 years for me, and they always make me happy and brave when I get into a scrape.

In China, I usually read some novel every week, sometime I draw some cartoons or sketch, on the weekend, I like shopping with my best friends and have a chat. Also, I love cooking,I think cooking is fun and full of happiness.

On the other hand, I am a transfer student of civil engineer, architecture attracted my attention several years ago, and it make me determine to study it constantly, even though maybe there are so many problems I can not anticipate. I wish to be a good architect in the future, but at the present, I only want to advance my English level as soon as possible, especially in listening and speaking.
